students’ perception on teachers’ attitudes, subject knowledge and skills of teaching with students’ motivation

ABSTRACT




The study was carried out to identify the relationship between students’ perception on teachers’ attitudes, subject knowledge and skills of teaching with students’ motivation. A total of 200 male and female students of Form Four and Form Five at one of the boarding schools in Johor were chosen randomly as respondents. Perception was seen from the aspect of Malay Language teacher’s teaching of the year 2009. This study is a survey research and data were accumulated by the use of questionnaire. The questionnaire contains 32 items with a value of α for students’ motivation was 0.81, teachers’ attitudes was 0.77, teachers’ teaching skills was 0.80 and teachers’ subject knowledge was 0.89. The data were analyzed by using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive analyses were used in finding the frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Meanwhile, Mann-Whitney test and Spearman’s Rho correlation were used in inferential analyses to test the research hypotheses. Research findings indicated that the mean values for students’ perceptions of teachers' attitudes, subject knowledge and skills of teaching with level of students’ motivation to learn were high. The research findings also showed that there were significant differences between male and female students where female students were higher in their perceptions of teachers’ attitudes, subject knowledge and skill of teaching and students’ motivation compared to male students. Meanwhile, there were moderate significant relationships between students’ perceptions on teachers’ attitudes, subject knowledge and skills of teaching with students’ motivation to learn ranging from r = 0.4 to 0.7. A few suggestions and recommendations for future researchers were put forward in this study.
